D&L's Nursery Tip of the Week |
Each week we will be providing you with information you can use to keep your
lawn and garden healthy, productive and looking beautiful. |
|
Week of July 7, 2008 |
Proper watering of perennials is critical this time of the year -watering perennial beds by hand is not usually adequate. Soaker horses, drip irrigation or sprinklers work best. Leave them on long enough to moisten the soil about 4-6 inches down. Morning is the best time to water so plants have enough water during the hottest time of day, and watering at night can promote fungal diseases. Water deeply and thoroughly, but only when needed.
Fertilize any perennials that are still actively growing - but, only if needed using Bradfield Organics All-Purpose 3-1-5. Perennials that have already bloomed or are finishing should be left alone. High temperatures are stressful for many perennials and they actually slow their growth and continuing to fertilize will not help in
this situation.
